McCombs – UT Austin Essay tips for 2011 intake ( Class of 2013)

McCombs – UT Austin Essay 1. Describe how your experiences, both personal and professional, have led you to pursue an MBA at this time. What are your short- and long-term goals and how will a Texas MBA help you achieve them? (Limit: 900 words)

Essay Tips: It looks like a typical goals essay except for the fact that unlike other MBA goal essays this one wants both your personal and professional experiences. So, don’t restrict your ‘why MBA?’ clarifications within professional or academic spheres, rather try to state real life examples from your personal experiences in support of your logic behind deciding for an MBA.

So, it will be wise to start the essay with a brief overview of your career and personal experiences so that you can explain what kind of a person or professional you are and why you feel the need for an MBA at this point of your life.

Having said that, it will be easy for you to attempt the next part of the question, i.e. talking about your short term and long term goals. You must have certain expectations; so reveal those here. What you think you can achieve immediately after completing MBA and how you think this MBA degree will add to your career growth in future are something that you need to reveal in this part.

Lastly, for the ‘Why Texas’ part, you are expected to be more particular and explain how you fit into Texas community. Quite naturally you better talk about your research on Texas here. If you have visited the campus, interacted with present and ex-students, done any online research, then this is your chance to articulate those.

McCombs – UT Austin Essay 2. Discuss a defining experience in your leadership development. What did you learn from this experience about your strengths and weaknesses as a leader? (Limit: 650 words)

Essay Tips: Your choice of real life experience matters a lot to score in this essay. Yes, you have to cite one of your leadership instances, but make sure that the example can reveal both your strengths and weaknesses as a leader. Except for showing how good a leader you are, you need to also prove how good a self analyzer you are in this essay. The admission committee wants to judge your thought process as well. So, while talking about the story, don’t forget to include how you planned to approach the problem keeping your strengths and weaknesses in mind. It will be better if you can end the essay with a positive note to show that you have the potential to grow as a leader.

McCombs – UT Austin Essay 3: At the McCombs School of Business, you will be part of an active and diverse community. How will you use your personal strengths and unique experiences to enrich the McCombs community during your two years in the program? (Limit: 500 words)

Essay Tips: A clear conception on McCombs community will be a must for you to do justice to this essay. You can conduct both online and offline researches to make out the latest trends of activities or programs in the clubs and organizations of McCombs. Once you get an idea of those, it will then be easy for you to relate your unique qualities to those and assume how you can contribute to their community. The essay is a great chance for you to stand out in the crowd by revealing some of your personal, professional and extra-curricular activities so far. If you have an interesting background, talk about that to the admission committee here. Sharing two or more of your experiences in a way that each of those represents some of your qualities will pay dividends here.
